New web platform

 9 April 2020

Hi everyone - the web platform has been upgraded across all NatureMapr projects - you may need to reset your bookmark. A new smartphone Android app is available and an updated iPhone app is ready for download from the App Stores. Meanwhile, as we expect some issues with the new website, please let us know by submitting a Technical Support request (under About).

The top row on my iPad is working again so I can use Species, Location, etc. but the Quick Search doesn't work.

Hi, I noticed when reporting location on the map there seems to be still a different colour overlay which makes it difficult to see details on the map. I’m using iPad. Kurt

Hi - thanks for all your hard work on this. I agree with Kurt - I found the colour overlay difficult to negotiate. Also, when I posted a caterpillar, there were three 'required' fields - size, what the insect was associated with, and any other insects it was interacting with. When I'm out walking, I have no idea of what the plants are, only that this looks like an interesting creature. I got through by writing nil. I'm not sure how to submit a support request?

How do you submit a support request?

Hi Aaron, thanks for all the work you guys do. I haven't had a good look at the new site yet as I was waiting till the changeover was complete to add any new sightings. However, the links to the Top Contributors and the Top Moderators don't work.

Just checking the admin side of things. While I don't often flag sightings I note that I can no longer view the sightings that I have flagged as 'Like'.

I can't see the 'bar' that allowed selection of plants etc and the subsets. I used that for browsing.

System seems much slower to respond. As a moths moderator I no longer seem to receive any alerts. Under the modified system yesterday I did receive alerts in the new format, but I no longer do.(12.01 pm Friday 10/4). I do receive messages. There are several unidentified moths in on the Únidentified' page, but I have to go there to deal with them.
ibaird wrote:

Hovering with my cursor over the énvelope' icon tells me I have '3 alerts' and '3 messages', but a subsequent click of the mouse cursor only reveals a window with the messages, I can't seem to access the 3 moderator alerts - unless there's a trick to it (12:18 pm Friday 10/4).

Hi, I find it very annoying that for insects the plant it was feeding on and interaction with other insects are now both required fields. For a large percentage of my sightings the insects are either on the ground or the walls of my house, and I rarely know the name of the plants when they are on a plant or grass. It is even rarer that there is any interaction with other insects. Also badly worded for a compulsory field. It doesn't say Was there any interaction with other insects and if so, what? Is this just for web notifications. Looking at some other sightings these fields don't seem to have been completed when reporting via Mobile app (seems 99% of sightings are by Mobile). My system is also running much slower but I thought it was just my computer.

I had many alerts dating back a long time so I cleared them. Now I have '2 alerts' but when I try to see them I get a Moderator alerts page telling me I have no alerts.
Bron wrote:

Thanks for your work Aaron, Like others I'm finding everything is slower, although that might be because over Easter people will be using computers more?? and like Alison I mostly don't know the plant the animal is on, so the content of these boxes will seldom be informative but slow the process further.

Hi Aaron, thanks for all your work. I think the list of sightings for Mt Ainslie isn't in chronological order anymore but seems to be semi-alphabetical. I found it more convenient to see the latest sightings at the top of the list after putting Mt Ainslie in the "quick search" field.

Support request: attempt to finalise 'add sighting' from Win 10, Chrome results in being being diverted to login page. Sighting (Diuris) not added. (Thanks for your patience)

Hi Aaron. Super fast! How do you define images now? After identifying a spider (Nephila plumipes) the main heading says Unidentified Insect. Also the Confirm option didn’t come up initially, only Suggest. Using Safari on iPad. I note that the heading is OK now.

Hi All, these are all great feedback items. We worked through a lot of issues today and will continue to address your feedback tomorrow. More to come...

Hi Aaron, thanks for all the effort you are putting in love how good the images look now. Agree with those above on the map colour overlay and having to put the extra info in for insects for reasons like those above. I find it more difficult to read the location lists and is it possible to put them in alphabetical order as it would make it easier to find a particular location when looking for it. Thanks again for all you are doing all your efforts are appreciated.
   10 Apr 2020
Hi Kurt, We've removed the colour overlay on the reporting map now so it's easier to see. You can also now only click within the project's boundaries on the map. Cheers Aaron.
   10 Apr 2020
Hi Matt, the report form lives in the About menu here: https://canberra.naturemapr.org/About/TechnicalContact
   10 Apr 2020
Hi LisaH, the map is resolved and also we've just fixed that mandatory field bug on some fields on the Add Sighting page. Thanks Aaron.
   10 Apr 2020
Hi Alison, we've now fixed the Top Contributor and Top Moderator links on the home page. Cheers Aaron.
   10 Apr 2020
Hi SRoss, The old list of categories (with icons) on the home page had to be removed for performance reasons. This has now moved to the Species dropdown menu or Quick Search. Cheers Aaron.
   10 Apr 2020
Hi ibaird, how is the system speed today? We sped it up yesterday so hopefully you should notice it. We also made a number of fixes to when alerts are sent and received. Are you getting them now? Cheers Aaron.
   10 Apr 2020
Hi ibaird, you need to select which type of alerts you want to click on. E.g. inside the dropdown it will say something like "3 moderator alerts", then you need to click on the "3 moderator alerts" to see those alerts. Due to the system generating so many alerts now (hundreds of thousands), we have had to split them up into more granular pages like that in order to be manageable. Cheers Aaron.
   10 Apr 2020
Hi Alison, the compulsory fields on insects was just a bug that is now resolved. Also system performance has been sped up. How is it today?
   10 Apr 2020
Hi Bron, hopefully you're all sorted today. Both resolved. Cheers Aaron.
   10 Apr 2020
Hi SilkeSma (hope you're well!), that has now been resolved. Location sighting list pages now sort by latest sightings first. Cheers Aaron.
   10 Apr 2020
Hi SthTallagandaSurvey, this is because you need to login again to the new website. But the new website will now remember your session, so you should only have to login once and you'll be good to go from here on. Cheers Aaron.
   10 Apr 2020
Hi RodDeb, all sorted. Cheers Aaron.
   10 Apr 2020
Hi Paul! Thanks for the feedback re: speed. The site should be a lot faster in general, but we had some tuning to do yesterday. Define Images isn't built yet (but we will work out a new feature for this soon). Re: heading we are aware of this bug and it will be resolved soon. Cheers Aaron.
   10 Apr 2020
Hi Mike, I know about that bug too. This is due to some alerts being related to old categories that may have since been deleted. We'll resolve ASAP. Cheers Aaron.

Hi Aaron Thanks for your reply - and for lots of improvements across the site. Thanks, it's very impressive. Is it planned to put a formal taxonomic base like in Atlas of Living Australia so that unusual sightings can be placed more easily. Please refer me to whoever works on this if it's not an appropriate place to ask. Cheers Bron
   10 Apr 2020
Hi Bron,

Later this year we plan to do quite a bit of work standardising the taxonomy across naturemapr projects and potentially looking at some increased integration to help support that.

Cheers

Aaron.
   10 Apr 2020
Thanks Aaron, you've been very busy. Much faster now. Significant and unidentified sightings still missing from personal profiles, but you know about that already.
   11 Apr 2020
Hi Aaron, another bug. I tried this just as a test. I was able to over-ride and confirm a sighting for which I am not a Moderator. At least I presume this is a bug.
   11 Apr 2020
Thanks Alison, can you please provide the link to the sighting. Cheers Aaron.

Hi Aaron, good work so far, but I guess still a few things to iron out. A couple of things I have noticed, though some probably repeats. 1. No option to view my flagged sightings. 2. Under My Profile only identified (confirmed) sightings appear. 3. Significant sightings and Unidentified sightings are still there if you click the link, but number shows as 0. Thanks for all your hard work :)
   11 Apr 2020
Hi Aaron, I tested it on this one as I knew it to be correct. https://canberra.naturemapr.org/Sightings/4256211 I remember when I was programming that most testers only test what they expect to work. They rarely try to 'break it'.

Hi Aaron, just noticed that any sighting that at least one person has already "liked" comes up as yellow even though I haven't seen it before, and if I press it, I "unlike" it. Also, it appears that I can see private notes. Eg. 3397661, 4235648 & 4236575

   11 Apr 2020
Hi Aaron, following on from CathB's comment, when viewing a sighting, the info displayed in the Size field and the Gender field now show numbers that I suspect are the field number rather than the content of the field. It was correct earlier so not sure what has happened.
   11 Apr 2020
Aaron, me again. Just a minor point but my counts are still not 'ticking over' on reaching the half centenary. My Profile page says 5084 sightings, but on the Top contributors page it says 5037 sightings. Noticed this is true for at least one other contributor (didn't check more than one). RodDeb has 4213 on their profile page but only 4201 on the Top Contributor page. One for the back burner. You have far more important bugs to fix first. Thanks
   11 Apr 2020
Hi WHall, this is your profile page (list of your sightings): https://canberra.naturemapr.org/Authors/20565

Profile page used to show the number of comments, confirmations, suggestions, as well as the date joined and the moderator authorisations a profile was responsible for.
   11 Apr 2020
When I submitted a new sighting, the confirmation page didn't include a link to the new sighting, which it did previously. Also, when I went to edit the sighting, an error occurred.
   11 Apr 2020
Hi Aaron, thanks for your ongoing work. Another issue: sightings only show the number range and not the exact number. Thanks

Hi Aaron,
Not sure this is related, but since the update, I get a red insecure site warning if I try to go to Budawang Coast via the Favorites Bar and it won't load. Also have to log in each time.

There a few orchids around - hope you can get out for a look.
   12 Apr 2020
Thanks for all your work Aaron.

I am getting an internal server error when I try to edit a sighting. (Not sure if this has been reported yet.).

Top snippet of error message:
An unhandled exception occurred while processing the request.
NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
NatureMapr.Web.Pages.EditSightingModel.PrepareForm() in Edit.cshtml.cs, line 272

Please let me know if you need any more specific info from the error log.
   12 Apr 2020
Also, not sure if this is really considered a bug, but certainly looks a little unusual -
When I am logged in, I am still presented with options to "Register" or "Login" in the top menu.
Typically these would not be shown to a logged in user?

Cheers!

Hi Aaron, still can't edit. I can get into the sighting but get the following when trying to update. An unhandled exception occurred while processing the request.
ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null. (Parameter 's')
System.DateTime.Parse(string s)

Also, the message at the bottom now says Report this sighting instead of Update, plus there is no Cancel if you change your mind-not sure if there was one before. Again, not sure if this was the case before but I don't see the comments or my suggestion on species. I also got the same error as Nicholas above last time I tried to add a new sighting. Haven't tried this morning yet. Thanks. Glad you got a chance to get out for a while.

Hi Aaron, Further to my last message - the problem is I didn't have GPS available in sightings, so add coordinates. The program now doesn't accept them, reverting instead to the suggested coordinates. This might have initiated the "Sighting is outside project boundaries!" response.

Hi Aaron, my edit sighting function is also not working. It takes me into the sighting, but minus a lot of the information, eg location, and at the bottom is the "report sighting" button so I am afraid to edit and click "report sighting" in case all of the existing information (ie the comments and id suggestions and confirmation) is lost. So similar to Alison's but I do not get an Unhandled exception error.

Another wish list for another time. I'd like to be able to see at least the printed location for unconfirmed sightings. It appears when hovering over the sighting on the latest sightings page but is not listed when viewing the actual sighting. I'm interested in where species are found even if they can't be viewed on a map due to sensitivity. Thanks
   13 Apr 2020
Aaron, trying to look up recently reported grasses to compared with photos I took I ended up on this page. Clicked on Grasses and was taken to daisies. Clicked on Plants and got an error message. Tested a couple of other Timeline pages. Clicking on the Genus always gives an error. Clicking on the Species either leads to an error or back to the same Plant - Daisies - even though the Species was a Tawny Frogmouth. This page also gave odd results. https://canberra.naturemapr.org/Sightings/Timeline/4253574 Thanks

I am uploading from a PC to the website, not through an app. I have tried uploading some of them three times! I submitted a request for tech support last week but haven't had a response.
