Platform consolidation and impact to regional functionality

In light of recent budgetary impacts to NatureMapr, our team has conducted an audit of platform functionality, to identify redundant or seldom used areas of the platform that can be consolidated or decommissioned to reduce the ongoing operating costs to support and maintain the entire platform footprint.

As a result of this work, we have had to decommission a subset of rich functionality in non-active regions.

Active regions are identified by their "lit up" colouring in the regional selector menu.

Active regions include the ACT and NSW where NatureMapr has partnered with ACT Government and NSW Government:

Inactive regions are where NatureMapr does not have a partnership with a respective state or territory government.

These regions are now identified with the following banner:

This change serves several purposes:

  • Help reduce NatureMapr's spiralling support and infrastructure costs
  • Ensure that active regions (ACT and NSW) are differentiated through a superior user experience as these regions are funded by our state and territory partners

As a result of these changes, inactive regions will no longer provide the following functionality:

  • Map search (expensive to host and operate)
  • Full list of contributors
  • Announcements
  • Events
  • Species Richness Score (SRS)
  • Dashboards

There may be some further impacts as our team continues to work through this process.

Importantly, NatureMapr will continue to accept uploaded sightings from anywhere in Australia. Basic sighting and field guide browsing and filtering functionality also remains unaffected at this time.

We thank our customers and the community for their continued support.

Here’s hoping we can build some new partnerships going forward!

Sounds sensible and like the Choyster, it would be great to see future partnerships, even the Commonwealth backing a home-grown platform for wildlife sightings across the whole country, which already works, and with support would only get better 👊
