Thanks Darcy, winter observations of snake activity are really useful. There’s a few snake species that are active throughout winter in this region and the red-belly is just one of them. Inland carpet pythons can often be encountered basking on sunny winter days and Dwyer’s snake is also often encountered beneath shelters in cool conditions.

I saw one a couple of weeks ago on a very cold day in Thurgoona near a creek and was its wasn't lethargic. It disappeared quickly into a clump of grass so I moved on quickly.
