User's notes

This young bird stumped us at Wonga Wetlands. There were no adult birds near it, no calls and it didn't make a sound. Magpie? Butcherbird? Something else? It ended up being a Pied Currawong. Never seen a young bird before. Just shows me, just when I think I've seen it all even common birds surprise me!

Did the parents come back to it Kylie? When I first saw it, I immediately thought Magpie. But looking closer it doesn't quite look like a Maggie.

I thought I had heard a Currawong call just before I saw the bird - but Mum didn't hear it. Just as we were going, one of the parents flew into the tree above us - but Mum discounted it at the time as the parent as she thought the young bird was a Magpie (this is what happens when you don't use your binoculars because you think you know what it is. So the bird was being fed. It was just at the time we passed they were out seeking food I think. Yes - the beak is bizarre and wrong for a Magpie.

I thought I should post it up seeing we were confused - and I've been birding for over 20 years!
