Could be a Camponotus intrepidus nest, but no actual evidence of ants to confirm that this is an ant nest.

User's notes

This weird looking thing made of mud was rising up from the ground. in the centre there was a tiny hole into the ground. It looked like a fungi or stalagmite but I guess its some kind of wasp or bee nest?

This is probably the entrance to an ant gallery. Several species of ants build such covering structures. It probably protects the entrance and burrow mound from rain splash erosion. Did you see any ants? Perhaps the most likely is the Flumed Sugar Ant (Camponotus intrepidus) but it is mainly active in the night

Aaah. Yes. There are always different species of ants on that path, but just none near it that day. It was just before rain threatened though. wow. ok. didn't know ants could do that!
