There is a lot of information about why and how they walk in procession athttp://lepidoptera.butterflyhouse.com.au/noto/lunifer.html

Basically they lay and follow a silk thread - so theone in front is responsible for the concrete stroll. 203 caterpillars in the one train is the record, which I'm sure Albury-Wodonga can beat
