Wow. never seen this before. I've taken tonnes of casings before, but even on this windy day I didn't notice the caterpillar coming out the top! I take it it is a moth caterpillar?

Yes, it is a caterpillar. They live inside their case for camouflage and protection from the elements. When old enough they pupate inside the case. The winged males emerge from the end of the case when they pupate.
