User's notes

I see this somewhere on this tree every year. Just don't know what it is. Caterpillar nest? Its only about 10cm round and its not that round. I don't think its a bird nest.

Interesting construction. Could be a spider egg shelter or a caterpillar shelter. Any chance of taking it into protective custody to see how it might develop, and better still, carefully dissecting it to see who is inside?

Yeah only problem with that is if thousands of spiders jump out you'll hear me screaming from Canberra! It always looks like shredded material like that and usually has a feather stuck on the outside somewhere. So I don't think I'll be doing that. Same tree I get those holes in the ground ID'd as moths one year. (dead one on ground). But it wouldn't do both would it - nest and ground?

At least cut it clear of the tree it is on and put it in an aquarium tank with a sealed lid, or even a large transparent plastic bag, and observe it, especially in the evening, and see who might come out to play.
