Very short, orangey in huge clusters right on the track itself. I tilted a few but it looked like the undersides were eaten out by something. Do look like they were just gills under.

Yeah, that would have been my guess - it just looked weird. But they did do spraying near/on this site last year so maybe that explains the speckledy caps. We have had a very dry autumn/winter.
