Naturalist since age 3 (probably earlier). Perennial and sustaining interests in insects and birds. Focus on other groups wax and wane with circumstances and exposure, but cover all biological categories. Began collecting insects as a teenager in Singapore in 1978; stopped collecting in 1987. Significant interest in birds began 1990, COG member since 1993, licenced bird bander since 2005. Local expertise in Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) from 2015. Scientific career mainly focussed on molecular and genetic means of pest control, particularly sheep blowfly (PhD) and recombinant myxomavirus approaches to rabbit control (through ANU, CSIRO Entomology, Pest Animal Control CRC). Now in Public Service with retirement imminent.
